Cool kid in the making?

Or, Christopher is a slave to fashion? You decide.

A few afternoons while walking home from school, Christopher has put one of the straps of his backpack across his body messenger-bag style. (The other strap just dangles, unused & unloved.)

We see a lot of the bigger kids wearing these messenger bag/backpack hybrids that some people messenger backpacks...I call them a sling backpack. mmmmhmmm. Here is an example of one:

The first couple of times, I just smiled to myself and didn't mention it, though today I asked him if he wanted one of these apparent status symbols. His first reaction was, "No, I don't think so, because with this one I can wear it either way."

Upon further reflection, he decided like a good little American that he'd perhaps like to have one bag of each type so he can choose based on his mood each day.

This is only the second time in his life he's wanted to do something because he's seen someone cool do it. The first was when he saw another 3 year-old swimming without any floaties and he decided to do it, too. The rest of the time, he couldn't care less what other kids are doing. We've tried to use the power of peer pressure to get him to do various things from potty training to playing catch with Frank, but his typical response to "All your friends are doing it" is a delighted and defiant, "But I'm not!"

Good for him, of course. We're just clever enough to see past the short-term irritation to appreciate that having a kid who's somewhat resistant to pressure like that is pretty cool.

As his current backpack was purchased at Target on clearance for $2.97, I don't feel too badly buying the mb for him.
