Christopher vs Kindergarten

Apparently drawing the conclusion that his new (very nice) teacher, Mrs B, is the living embodiment of the feared institution of Kindergarten, Christopher was less than warm to her when she came over to meet us last night.

He was polite (mostly), but not the ham that he usually is.

Among the highlights:
  • "Christopher, here's a new book I brought for you. Do you like to read?" C: "It's not my favorite thing." (which is when I jump in to say that he loves to be read to! and then decide I shouldn't answer for him just because I want her to like him....it's like some sort of weird puppetry act that I'd like to avoid)
  • "Christopher, what kinds of things do you like to do?" C: "Well, I don't really think I want to talk about that right now." (???)
  • "Christopher, do you have any questions about Kindergarten?" C:"I just don't really think it's for me."
Mind you, all of these questions were said in a polite manner with somewhat direct eye contact, but I think this is Christopher's way of raging against the machine.

On the plus side, I think she made him feel a little better about the cafeteria. And he did announce his loose toothness to her, which is a good sign. She took all of this very well, which means she's ok in my book.

Should be an interesting year!

Exciting Times Around Here

Today we got THE CALL from Christopher's kindergarten teacher, introducing herself. She'll be coming over tomorrow afternoon for a home visit to meet Christopher and us. Christopher's excited about meeting her, but still says he's nervous about 'that big school.'

His top fears?
  • The cafeteria. How does it work? Will there be big kids in there? How will I know how to get there? What if I get something for lunch I don't like?
  • The principal. Is she mean? Will I be sent there? Will she call my mom?
  • Rules. Why do we have to get there so early?
Funny kid, that kid.

Today has been a buzz of excitement as all the moms have been emailing & calling around to find out who's where. So far, Christopher knows zero children in his class. We haven't passed that news along and probably won't, and I'm sure we'll come across someone we know sooner or later.

Bragging Rights

After months of waiting...Christopher is now the proud owner of not one but TWO loose teeth! This is great news for the boy, especially in light of the dentist's somewhat disheartening comment earlier today that he's not 'breaking any records' in the tooth-losing race.

So now he's a little bit more excited about Kindergarten because he'll have some wiggly - or missing - teeth to show off. I'm guessing they'll be wiggly since they're just a tiny bit loose right now.

Pictures of teeth twisted around sideways sure to follow, any week now....

Kissing

Christopher, randomly, from the back seat of the car: "Mom, I think it's pretty much ladies (said in the same way he says broccoli) who care so much about kissing."

Nap is a 4-letter word

Today, Christopher was watching tv while I was in the kitchen, and all of a sudden he started crying and yelling. It was the weirdest thing. When I asked him what was wrong, he flung himself to the floor and hollered at me that he didn’t want to talk about it. When I ascertained that it wasn’t something embarrassing and that he hadn’t been picking his mosquito bites again, I told him he had to tell me. I was worried he'd gotten hurt or something.

Kicking and yelling, he yelled, “It’s just that I was watching tv and I kept falling asleep!!!!”

He went back to watching tv but after a couple of minutes he turned it off and went upstairs to play, I think as insurance against falling asleep again.

God forbid that someone should take a nap in this house!

Arrggh

Jax has the best deadpan face. I think it means either, I'm enduring this because it amuses you pathetic people and you feed me or I will chew your face off tonight when you sleep.

One or the other...I'll let you know which.

Back in Noah's day

..I'm sure I would've been one of the naysayers, rolling my eyes at the freakshow building an ark because of some voice in his head. It's not a pretty truth, but there it is. I can't stand alarmism, perhaps to a fault.

And, before the summer, I'd even have been tempted to consider a lot in the so-called hundred-year flood plain. Not anymore!! These 40+ days and nights of rain, flooding and mayhem have caused me to rethink a bit. Check out these pictures of Carlos n Charlie's:

Normally, Carlos n Charlie's looks like this, with the water 15-20 feet (I'm guessing) below the upper levels & parking lot:

Although this is a different view, you can see the thatched roof in both pics for comparison. It's normally a walk down a bunch of steep stairs to the dock from the parking lot:

No fireworks on the lake for us this year! Lake Travis is closed for the foreseeable future, until enough water escapes through the open floodgates to make swimming & boating safe(r).
