Seriously, HEB?

Evidently HEB (our grocery store) has had problems with people stealing its donuts, because Frank came home with this:

I can't think of any other reason they'd do this, unless maybe they're making donuts less frequently and need the containers to help preserve them longer.  Frank said that every single one of the donuts was similarly packaged.

What a ridiculous waste. Yeah, I can recycle them. But I could also recycle a single plastic bag that would hold all three.

Guess who's writing a letter to HEB today?

Garden update: black bean sprouts

Last week I planted 9 black beans in my square foot garden, and this morning I saw that 8 of them have sprouted.  It's probably too many for my space, but I underestimated how many would actually sprout. I can probably move a couple of them to another square if need be.

I like that the whole bean grows out of the ground and that it splits open to let the leaves out.  Pretty cool.

Log Cabin weekend

For the second year in a row, our families rented a large log "cabin" on Lake LBJ and had a great time.

Lots of this:

Scott does a gainer off the rope swing

the almost-flip. ouch.

Next up: water into wine?

And just general fun:

Jackson Hole / Idaho trip

The weekend before school started, we flew to Jackson Hole for a quick end-of-summer trip. Frank, Scott, my dad and about 15 other runners we know did a marathon near Mesa Falls, Idaho, and I got to visit one of my favorite places for the second time in 4 years. I feel pretty dang lucky that we get to travel as much as we do.

Some pics:

the famous, slightly macabre antler arches in downtoan Jackson Hole.

Looking down into Jackson Hole from the Teton Pass.

purple mountain's majesty, and amber waves of grain

wheat angels: less fun than it sounds like.

five ridiculous men, after finishing their 1lb burgers.

This dandelion was about as big as my fist.

Another Boston qualifying time for Frank!

The top of Upper Mesa Falls, Idaho - beautiful display of mist, moss and sunlight.
