After the cool temperatures & adventures of the Arenal and Monteverde area, we were ready for some beach time,
and the hot, dry climate of the Guanacaste coast was perfect.
We stayed at the Melia Playa Conchal, a really nice condo-style resort on the beach. It had a huge lagoon-style pool, a nice beach, and lots of
iguanas and crabs walking around. We spent a day deep-sea fishing with a couple we met and another couple, and each of us pulled in fish from 55-85lbs,
but we threw them back (had to).
At the end of the trip, after an exchange we had with the other couple, Shelley panicked about the 45-minute plane ride back to San Jose. Frank came
to her rescue and agreed to take the 5-hour shuttle ride back to San Jose, so we read books and tried to ignore the (probably even more dangerous) driving
of the shuttle driver. (Shelley felt even more grateful to Frank when 3 weeks later, tragically, the airline we were supposed to fly
crashed one of its planes - with 8 tourists aboard -
into the volcano).
