After a couple of days in the Arenal Volcano area, we were driven to a great little hotel in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. We stayed at the family-owned Trapp Family Lodge. Andres Trapp Belmar, the friendly hotel owner, was also our guide in the Cloud Forest.

It was cooler in Monteverde, and our bed had about 4 blankets on it. One night I lifted up my pillow, and there was an irridescent green beetle on my pillow. He was cute, but as I didn't want him in bed with me, I opened our balcony door to let him out, letting literally thousands of bugs into our room. We were able to turn off all the lights except the one in the bathroom, so they all swarmed in there. We slept relatively bug-free, though taking a shower in bug soup the next day was somewhat disgusting.     Next Stop: the Guanacaste Coast
