The Austin Film Society (AFS), which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2005, promotes the appreciation of film and supports creative filmmaking. AFS shows rarely seen films, gives grants and other support to emerging filmmakers, and provides access and education about film to students and the public. Through Austin Studios, opened in 2000 in partnership with the City, AFS helps attract film development and production to Austin and Texas. To date, Austin Studios has been home to more than 60 productions, including 30 feature films, creating a local economic impact of more than $500 million. AFS will use $5 million in Proposition 4 funding to help expand and improve Austin Studios film stages and digital facilities.
